The Road to GNR Week 2/10

Breastsrokes Serpentine 2007

My GNR training plan includes the dreaded interval session which is gradually turning ino the dreaded and therefore avoided interval session. I was hoping that a regularish visit to BPTT would suffice as my speed training component but that does rather require me to get there. This Saturday was missed as I was volunteering at a bizarre little charity event - Breaststrokes. I was by the Serpentine in Hyde Park by 5.30 am directing swimmers in to the path of rather bemused swans.

Thankfully the long run component of the schedule is working pretty well. Today I did my first circumnavigation of Richmond Park. Shakti cycled alongside me after I discovered a system for restraining her speed - I ran with my hand hooked in the cycle lock around her waist. Quite a relaxing system and she carried my water bottle for me.

Chuffed to bits with the distance but it was pitifully slow. At this rate its going to take me more than 3 hours to finish the half, quite a bit more than 3 hours actually. I clearly need to make room those dreaded intervals.

Weekly summary:

Mon: 42 km bike
Tue: 11.55 km run
Wed: 42 km bike
Thur: 42 km bike
Fri: zilch, zippo, nada (seems to be the Friday theme)
Sat: 20 km bike
Sun: 12.17 km run & 5 km walk

I’m really impressed with the amount of cycling you are doing! Is that part of your commute? So, like 21km in the morning and 21km in the afternoon? That is damn awesome. Without me prying tooooo much - how long does that take you? Is it flat?

(Hmmmmm, guess who’s cycling more than running at the moment ….?)

Oh and I think your running is excellent too. And who gives a willy about how long it takes!

Intervals are your friend. Or is that hills? I miss my lunchtime interval sessions, yeah right :-)

Hi Celeste, the bike bits are my commute so they are split in two as you suggest. It’s pretty flat and takes me about 55 mins each way. I get quite tired of it if I do it everyday so its a relief to take a break and run home sometimes.

Intervals will hurt but ultimately will do you a lot of good :-)

I’m near enough to pop over on a weekend to yell coach stylee if needs be ;-)

Great cycling though - good going!

Intervals are worth the effort. I seem to remember you telling me that a few months ago. How about trying some fartlek if you don’t fancy intervals. That’s a lot of fun.

Why are you biking so much? Are you planning on grabbing one of the race officials by the bike lock and violently relieving him/her of his/her bike if you get tired in the race? I’m joking. Don’t be so hard on yourself. I’ve read that you can also get faster at longer distances just by running a lot, and if it’s in black and white it’s good enough for me!

Intervals aren’t so bad. At least they’re over quickly and you can listen to “bananabananabananaterricottaterricottapie!” while you’re doing them :)

Intervals are good providing you listen to you body. It’s easy to overdo things I think and I usually come down with niggles and injuries if I am overcommitted to an interval program.
