Tabio Running Sock Review and Giveaway

I was encouraged out on today’s run by the arrival of some new socks for me to trial and review.

I’ve been sent a fascinating collection of running specific sports socks from the Japanese manufacturer Tabio. Today I tried out the Tabio Racing Run Toe Sock but I also have the lovely lobster styled Tabi Socks and the more conventional Racing Run Sock yet to trial.

The first thing that struck me about the socks was the price. At £28 a pair they are the most expensive sock I’ve ever worn. The last sock I bought also had that accolade but at £21 for a twin pack it was a snip at the price.

I got over the price fairly quickly but that might have something to do with them being a free gift.

They generated rather a lot of excitement in the house, which can’t be said of the other socks I own. Quite the opposite actually.

The Tabio socks have a host of design features, the most obvious in this pair is the individual toe compartments like the Vibram Five Fingers. This supposedly improves balance and push off. I think they look rather snazzy. They’ve also got arch support by way of some nifty weaving and extra large heel compartment to prevent the sock riding up or down. The most useful feature as far as I’m concerned is the skidproof patches on the soles.

I have quite a large middle toe and it tends to get bashed mercilessly on the end of my shoe, after 5km I’ll inevitably have a bruised toenail and by 13km the nail may have pulled completely away. With the non slip design I felt as though my feet held in place and I certainly didn’t feel any impact pain from my toes.

I’m going to try these socks out with a variety of shoes and longer distances so I will soon know if they are toe savers.

Now for the giveaway.

I have two pairs of Tabio Socks: Racing Run and Racing Run Toe Sock size 4-6.5 that I can give away to readers of this blog.

Nothing two onerous, I’ll give one pair to a random commenter on the blog and I’ll give another to the commenter who pleads their case most impressively. Good luck – they really are quite exciting socks.

  1. I’m not commenting to win as I have rather large hoofers for a woman (8.5 in running shoes). I too have the middle toe issue, but I’m not sure I would pay £28 for ONE pair of socks to prevent it…interesting to see if they work over longer distances.

  2. Let us know how you get on with them socks later on. Suppose they might be handy if you tend to get blisters between the toes? I’m a size 11 (UK), so ferget about it.

  3. I’d love to try these out. I’ve been having a terrible time with blisters between my toes, and nasty calluses on the ends of my toes (lovely right?)…I wonder if these would help?

  4. I’d love to win as apart from my shoes they would be the most expensive item I would be wearing. I am in need of new socks as mine have all developed holes. I am doing my fist half marathon in sept (GNR) and would feel pretty special with those bad boys on my feet

  5. Thanks for the comments folks – I’ll declare a winner after a few more days. So far we have 2 pairs of socks and 3 commenters in the running – that’s if we count the fairly plaintive request from Jogblog whose middle name could be freebie.

  6. Sorry guys I think I have the best sob story of all! I have tried absolutely everything to get my feet to stop blistering. Even professional club runners find my feet completely ridiculous! I’ve been through multiple pairs of trainers, tried strapping, vaseline, compeed, thin socks, thick socks, dual layer socks. I can’t bear to spend anymore on this issue of mine. So a free pair of tabio socks would be fab! Worth a try eh!?

  7. Oh my, last year I won some rather fetching Vibrams and am yet to actually run in them (if you exclude the little jaunt I did for the cameras in Hyde Park) and it’s partly due to the discomfort I feel when wearing them without socks. Now these little beauties would do just the trick and, knowing what an ambassador you are for barefoot running, you will no doubt want to encourage me in my endeavours to give it a go!

    (is that pleading enough?)

  8. I love toe socks and the vibram shoes. But those colors rock! Just putting them on would make me smile and run for the joy of it,

  9. Hi,

I work for a company called sockshop.co.uk; we are interested in promoting some of our running and sports products.

I was wondering if you would be interested in trying out some samples of our socks that we currently sell on our web site and putting a review on your web site.

Sorry for posting on a comment, but I couldn’t see a contact link.

    Regards,
    Dave

  10. I’ve been a bit delayed in declaring my winners but here goes!
    Ta da.
Winner of the Tabio Racing Run toe socks is Amanda and the winner of the Racing Run sock is Michelle who sounds like she could do with a clothing treat.

I’ll contact you both direct for address details – it would be nice if you popped back and told us what you thought about your socks.

  11. Thanks warriorwoman! I received the socks and took them for a spin on Friday afternoon. They feel great on – I was expecting them to be like other toe socks, where you can feel the fabric bunching up between your toes, but once they’re on, you don’t really notice them. I love the rubber grippers – my podiatrist recommended that I use rubber insoles to keep my feet from sliding in my shoes, and these were a great solution. My only complaint is the material – a little thick, and not quite as breathable as what I’m used to. But I really enjoyed them, and thought they were helpful in keeping my toes from rubbing together. I may buy a few more pairs!

I'd love to hear from you....
