Health & Fitness Statistics

This page is going to show the scary truth of my weight and given that I possess numerous gadgets, from blood pressure monitors to speak your weight body composition monitors, I ought to be able to include a whole variety of other stats.

To date, I have lost a total of 7 stone over a period of 6 years. Unfortunately I didn't keep records until fairly recently. I tend to find that my weight loss occurs in steps and sometimes it can be a struggle to push myself from the plateau. The chart below shows how I have pushed myself through numerous weight loss phases over the last year and shows, quite frighteningly, what happens when I take my eye of the ball.

I'm hoping that by being so open in the blog, I will be encouraged to keep regular updates and therefore keep a check of any weight increases. I could have saved myself a lot of hassle last year just by staying exactly as I was!

Yearly Progress

I've spent the last few days transferring my hand written running diary to SportTracks.
I started my run/walk program at the end of 2004 and religiously kept notes of distance, time, weight and my general feelings. The garmin forerunner arrived around May 2005 and left the diary defunct as I was now automatically uploading the data to SportTracks.

Its been quite good fun merging the two sources together. I can remember some of those early runs so clearly. This comment from 10th October 2004 reminded me of the first time I got a hint of the runners high:

"Tried to up the amount of time spent running. On one of the middle stretches I actually felt myself get into stride - it felt good. My lungs were a furnace though so I couldn't continue for long.
Worried about my thighs again, better take it easy for the next few days as I have a kickboxing class on Wednesday and need to be able to walk."

I can now clearly see how I have progressed. When I first started, I ran for a total of 4 minutes with 1 minute walks between each minute of running. I could barely breath and afterwards I could barely walk. At the end of the year I can happily say I have run a total of 305 km and can now run for 10 km without stopping. Completing the Nike 10k race in September gave me a greater sense of satisfaction and pride than I felt when I received my PhD doctorate two months later.

Roll on the new challenges for 2007!
