Challenges

To keep the inspiration levels high I often get myself involved in some form of sporting challenge.
Regular staples are the Janathon and Juneathon – “run and blog every day of the month” challenges but I’ve also taken part in a run the London Tube Line Salomon challenge and the Nike Grid.

I had a special alcohol dispensation pass today. I was meeting strangers in the guise of Lynn’s friends and it is widely accepted that I don’t do strangers well when sober. 3 pints of Peroni later and I can’t really claim to do many things well. Still, it’s Juneathon and only day 3 so I [...]

Speedy and...

The momentum is sliding already, I don’t think it’ll be too long before I’m pushing the rules to the limits and squeezing my run and blog into the dying seconds before midnight. As it was, we were out and back with a whole hour to spare this evening. Lynn has barely run at all since [...]

June - In the Nick of Time

I’ve rarely awaited the start of a month with more anticipation. June and the original -athon is upon us and that means daily running, daily blogging and an ever increasing pile of excuses as the month wears on. It also means increased fitness and the tiny chance of a bit of weightloss and given that [...]

The Wonders of Wimbledon Common

The Wonders of Wimbledon Common

I have a warm rosy glow for Janathon at the moment. It’s done wonders for my fitness and given my marathon training the boost it very desperately needed. I woke up this morning, got kitted up for running and then spent the next 5 hours procrastinating, dithering and grumbling. I managed to tick off a [...]

Day 13 – Delays

Day 13 - Delays

The day disappeared with itself yesterday. I’d planned a running commute which takes precision organisation and an evening without commitments but my boss had other plans and kept me back late. By the time I’d run home I had no energy for Jog, Log, Blog, all I could manage was the 3 B’s: Beer, Bath, [...]

Day 9 and the Muddy Face Plant

Quite early on in the run I decided I was a lazy shuffler. I think the epiphany came 750m into my long run when a dandelion root and a barely lifted foot, sent me sprawling head first into a muddy verge. Any further into my run along the Wandle River and I would have created [...]

Day 8 – Harder to Breathe

Day 8 - Harder to Breathe

Well I’m still breathing but at Janathon Day 8 I’m finding it harder and harder to blog. Daily jogging is a doddle in a comparison to daily blogging. The pressure to find something worth sharing is building and it doesn’t get easier when I perform the run on the treadmill in the back room – [...]

Day 7 - A Night on the Tiles

We had plans for this evening, none of which encompassed Janathon. I should have thought ahead and gone for a pre-work run but I didn’t. Instead I was sitting on the tube at something past 11pm thinking I wasn’t really in the mood for midnight running. We’d all been to see Blood Brothers and I [...]

Day 6 and another Running Commute

I took my nordic poles into work today. I proper ummed and ahhed about it, but in the end I decided the health of my knee might be worth a bit of humiliation through Brixton. When the heavens opened, mid afternoon, I was so grateful, imagining empty streets in which I could gallop along, bounding [...]

Day 5 and the Ballistic Kitty

Day 5 and the Ballistic Kitty

The treadmill mounted a little skirmish today. It catapulted the little kitten off the end of the track and into the legs of a dining chair and then it did it’s absolute best to send me off in the exact same way. I normally bumble along at 7kph with a zero incline but today I [...]
