A rather odd couple quit everything to travel the world on bikes....

From Fag Ash Lils' to Warrior Women

We both encouraged each other to smoke rather too much for comfort so its nice that we helped each other to quit too.

For years we rolled our own fags and puffed away from morning to night. I would roll out of bed and smoke at least 4 before cycling to work and then have more before I started my day. What a waste of exercise. Shakti suffers from asthma so why on earth she ever started smoking - goodness knows?

I always thought I enjoyed my personal smog sticks but when I decided to quit my job to go back to university and study for my PhD, I thought I could do to save some money. Shakti on the other hand, hated the fact that she smoked, her breathing was getting worse and it was clear that I was making it rather difficult for her to quit alone.

Someone from work mentioned Alan Carr and as I love books I bought it and whats more I read it. Thats not as easy as it sounds as Alan Carr is rather annoying and pushes a point to the death but given my healthy finances and healthy body I really shouldn't be complaining.

You continue smoking while reading the book, so that you can examine your own feelings while smoking and watch others doing the same. This is great as you never feel the panic of giving up and you can read as quickly or slowly as you like. I was reading it just before we went on holiday to Borneo, (I thought it would be useful to have quit before I had to deal with a 14 hour flight) and I really could not wait to finish both the book and with it my last fag. I was in the smoking corner of the departure lounge and looking around at the miserable, stinking, unhealthy bunch I felt a surge of relief as I realised that I was no longer part of their group.

I dropped my tobacco box in the trash and walked smiling to my new holiday and new life - a committed non- smoker. No pangs, no will-power, no weight gain, no coughing - just great health.

Shakti on the other hand, hates waste more than smoking! She retrieved my box of tobacco from the bin and continued to smoke through the holiday. She isn't a big reader so I kept reading little snippets of Alan Carr's book to her while she smoked, and helpfully pointed out how weak and needy she appeared as a smoker.

I think it is testimony to the powerful technique outlined in Alan Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking that it worked for Shakti even in second hand chunks. She soon threw away the tobacco and neither of us have smoked since or even suffered with urges. I used to feel excited about mixing with smokers in pubs because I felt so strong but now I feel so natural - as though I have always been a non smoker.

I can't recommend it to you highly enough, I hate to think of people struggling to quit when I remember how easy it was for me to realise I was a non-smoker after all.
